Yogurt (Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus)

Name: Yogurt (Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus)

Observation:  This pic was taken during one of my many trips to Wawa.  This is strawbbery Banana Yogurt.  I never actually thought of yogurt being an organism but I remembered it is made with bacteria.  Here is what I found doing a little research: is a dairy product produced by bacterial fermentation of milk. The bacteria used to make yoghurt are known as "yoghurt cultures". Fermentation of lactose by these bacteria produces lactic acid, which acts on milk protein to give yoghurt its texture and its characteristic tang (wikipedia.org, 2011).  Dairy yoghurt is produced using a culture of Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus bacteria. In addition, Lactobacillus acidophilus, bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus casei are also sometimes added during or after culturing yoghurt (wikipedia.org, 2011).
