Fungus

Name:  Fungus
Kingdom: Fungi
(unranked): Opisthokonta
Domain: Eukaryota
Observation: This was fungus that was seen growing off a tree that we observed during our class trip.  Looking at it made me wonder how many times I had passed fungi and had no idea that it was fungi.   Fungi is a member of a large group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds (British English: moulds), as well as the more familiar mushrooms. These organisms are classified as a kingdom, Fungi, which is separate from plants, animals, and bacteria. One major difference is that fungal cells have cell walls that contain chitin, unlike the cell walls of plants, which contain cellulose (wikipedia.org, 2011).
Questions:
1.      Is fungus dangerous?
2.      If mushrooms stem from fungus and are edible if fruit grows fungus is it edible?
3.      Is the fungus growing out of the tree the same type of fungi used in food?
Scientific Research:
Morse, Fred W. and Stevens, Neil E. The Effect of the Endrot Fungus on Cranberries, American Journal of Botany, Vol. 6, No. 6 (Jun., 1919), pp. 235-241.  Article Stable URL: http://www.jstor.org/stable/2435
If mushrooms stem from fungus and are edible if fruit grows fungus is it edible?
No.  Endrot fungus first appears as a softening of the tissues accompanied by a slightly yellowish or brownish yellow water discoloration of the skin (Morse, Stevens, 1919).  The diseased part is lighter-colored than the sound portion of the berry.  The rot usually begins at the side of the calyx and spreads until the entire inner tissue of the berry is reduced to a pulp (Morse, Stevens, 1919).  When something is reduced to a pulp it is barely visible decreasing it’s edibility.
